A description is given of the morphological characters of Phoma section Phyllostictoides and its taxonomical position is discussed. A key is provided for the varieties of the type species Phoma exigua Desm., followed by a host-fungus and a fungus-host index. Two new varieties are proposed: Phoma exigua var. forsythiae (Sacc.) comb. nov. and Phoma exigua var. noackiana (Allesch.) comb. nov. The synonymy, selected literature, a representative culture and data on ecology and distribution are given for all varieties.

This report summarizes the results of the North Dakota Land Valuation Model. This model is used annually to estimate average land values by county, based on the value of production produced on that land. The county land values developed from this procedure form the basis for the 2001 valuation of agricultural land for assessment of real estate taxes. The average all land value from this analysis is multiplied by the total acres of agricultural land on the county abstract to determine each county's total agricultural land value. Rhagoletis indifferens, een nieuwe boorvlieg voor de Nederlandse fauna (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Rhagoletis indifferens, a new tephritid fly to the Dutch fauna (Diptera: Tephritidae) Rhagoletis indifferens is a North-American species which, in Europe, was known from Switzerland only. In August 1999 a specimen was caught with a Malaise-trap in a garden in Burgh (province of Zeeland). Later the larvae were found in the berries of Prunus serotina in the coastal dunes near Burgh. They were collected and raised. In June 2000 the first adult emerged. In August 2000 the adults were also found in the field.

New and rare flies for the Dutch fauna (Diptera) In this paper an overview is given of the author’s captures of rare and interesting Diptera, mainly from the years 1997-2000. In total 36 species from ten families are presented, of which four are new to the Dutch fauna (marked with an *), Empis confusa Loew, 1865 (Empididae), Temnosira ambusta (Meigen, 1826) (Pallopteridae), Chetostoma curvinerve Rondani, 1856 (Tephritidae) and Tephritis separata Rondani, 1871 (Tephritidae).

HLA-DQA1 allele typing by nonisotopic PCR-LIS-SSCP

In the present study we used a simple and reliable method for HLA-DQA1 allele typing based on the single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) properties of DNA molecules obtained by PCR. The technique consists of PCR amplification of a DNA fragment comprising the second exon of the HLA-DQA1 gene, amplicon denaturation using a low ionic strength solution (LIS), and electrophoresis on a small native polyacrylamide gel, followed by a rapid silver staining procedure. In order to validate the technique and to obtain the allele patterns for the DQA1 gene, 50 cervical samples were typed using this methodology and the commercial Amplitype® HLA DQA1 Amplification and Typing kit. Callitriche palustris is very rare in the Netherlands. The last recent records were from 1953 and 1979. Therefore it is quite remarkable that in 1999 and 2000 C. palustris was found at several locations by independent observers: 1. Poached clay overlying sandy soils along the river Vecht which flooded during extremely high water; 2. Ditches in low-lying parts of a clay polder. The ditches are probably fed by a combination of precipitation and inflow from the river Rhine; 3. We report a case of leptospirosis that occurred after elective surgery involving tendon transfer and shoulder arthroscopy. The disease mimicked hospital infection after orthopedic surgery and was at first misdiagnosed as post-operative sepsis. The patient was 60 year old female that developed sepsis with hypotension, shock, bleeding, jaundice and renal insufficiency 4 hours after surgery. Shock treatment procedures were performed and broad spectrum antibiotic therapy was used with coverage for bacteria acquired in hospitals. The Dufour gland is found closely associated with the sting apparatus of all hymenopteran females, playing multiple roles among bees. In Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 the gland is connected to the dorsal vaginal wall and, in queens, it produces egg-marking pheromones. In workers the function of this gland is unknown, except by its capacity to mimic the queen secretion in egg-laying workers. Recentemente, foi descoberta uma raça do nematóide-de-cisto-da-soja (NCS; Heterodera glycines) que apresentou a capacidade de quebrar a resistência da cultivar Hartwig, até então considerada resistente a todas as raças conhecidas do nematóide. Essa população foi coletada no Município de Sorriso, Estado do Mato Grosso, e foi caracterizada como raça 4. Para verificar a diversidade genética entre esta e outras populações pertencentes às raças 4 e 9, foi feita uma caracterização molecular pela técnica de marcadores moleculares RAPD. Esta revisão apresenta uma síntese a respeito da plasticidade alimentar em teleósteos de água doce em relação às variações espaço-temporais, ontogenéticas, individuais e comportamentais. A ocorrência de dieta flexível é uma característica marcante da ictiofauna fluvial tropical, onde a maioria das espécies pode mudar de um alimento para outro tão logo ocorram oscilações na abundância relativa do recurso alimentar em uso, motivadas por alterações ambientais espaço-temporais. Iheringichthys labrosus is a secondary commercial fish species in the Itaipu Reservoir, but it is important in other reservoirs of the basin. However, little information exists about this species in the literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the diet of this species in the Itaipu Reservoir. Pesquisas acerca da fisiologia de plantas em resposta ao ataque de nematóides normalmente são feitas com doses altas de inóculo, quer sejam ovos ou juvenis de segundo estágio. Diferentemente, as avaliações da resistência de plantas a nematóides em programas de melhoramento são realizadas com doses bastante inferiores. Neste estudo acompanhou-se a variação de alguns parâmetros fisiológicos em algodão, em resposta à aplicação de baixas doses de inóculo de Meloidogyne incognita raça 3.
